Wild Within is a collaboratively made, mixed media art project. Led by Sophie – graphic designer turned traditional artist, supported by her partner Thom. Based from the heart of the Brecon Beacons / Bannau Brycheiniog, Wales.

We are currently working towards selling at markets & fairs in Mid Wales. Online, we offer a display of our creations along with prints, greetings cards, bookmarks and commissions available through this web site.
The Process
1
It starts with an idea for a shape, Thom sketches out an outline which is then traced onto 300gsm watercolour paper, ready for Sophie to begin to fill..

2
The inner space is first livened up with watercolours, blending a palette of 3-6 colours. Background splatters can be added at this point too.

3
Once dry, the intricate details are drawn in mechanical pencil, the different plants are planned in advance but the pattern making is very freestyle.

4
Next the pattern is painted in acrylics, each type of flora has a specific colour, so are species painted one at time.

5
All of the pattern is then delicately outlined in a tiny 0.03 point fine-liner. Finally, the outer shape is also outlined with a slightly thicker pen.

6
..and the piece is complete! Ready to be sent to it’s new owner or digitally perfected and made into prints / greetings cards.

How long does it take?
Depending on the size of the shape,
an A5 piece takes up to 8 hours to complete,
A4: around 10-12 hours,
and 14-16 hours for A3.
Message from Sophie: "I've always loved looking at the tiny details in art and remember as a child only colouring the smallest sections of an image in colouring books, leaving the big spaces blank. Having battled a lot of my life for good mental health, this project that contains my creativity and provides lots of intricate drawings to colour is a therapy that I delight in every minute of. I hope you will enjoy our creations too!"
